Reviewing the “Science Communication Literacy: Interdisciplinary Approaches” Student Symposium

We completed the III. Undergraduate and Postgraduate Student Symposium titled “Science Communication Literacy: Interdisciplinary Approaches” on May 15th, which was hosted by Istanbul Beykent University, Faculty of Communication, and where I served on the organizing committee.

This year, it was a great pleasure for us to welcome young researchers from numerous universities and different disciplines. Our goal was to provide a dynamic academic platform where our students could comfortably present their theoretical and practical studies, and share and discuss their ideas; it is a joy to see that we are getting one step closer to this objective with each passing year. We designed the symposium, where a total of 48 papers were presented at the associate, undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels, as a hybrid event with both face-to-face and online participation options. In this way, we had the chance to bring together students from all across Turkey.

Our distinguished guests Prof. Dr. Nilüfer Timisi and Akan Abdula also made significant contributions to the symposium with their opening speeches. In particular, I believe that the insights presented by Akan Abdula regarding sectoral transformations, and his data-driven delivery of the upcoming changes in the context of future knowledge, skills, and competencies, were extremely guiding for our students.

One of the most educational processes of the symposium for me was the online session that I moderated again this year. In this session, my fellow students made invaluable contributions to current fields such as artificial intelligence, algorithms, digital platforms, science storytelling, new media, conspiracy theories, and the perception of science.

I would like to thank all my colleagues who contributed to the organization of the symposium, the organizing committee, and all the student friends whose valuable work made the event meaningful. Hope to see you in new academic studies and events.

You can review the remaining visuals from the symposium below. When the symposium proceedings book is published, I will also be sharing it here.
